Questions on flat or convex?
Flat -- is soft cotton material on the side that touches the skin - no matter what the material is on the outside. It is stuffed with cotton and if you still have your eye, it will hold your eye closed. It can be washed and layed flat to dry. You can also make it more flat (if too fluffy) by running a hot iron over the towel covered eye patch.
Convex -- this also has the soft cotton on the skin touching side, and has a foam insert that keeps the eye patch away from your eye allowing it to blink.
